Cut from real maple ply, in pale maple or dark walnut, so the light comes through wood grain rather than plastic. Rechargeable over USB with no cable trailing off the shelf, and it runs five to eight hours on a charge.

A note on the first few opens

Yours will arrive shut tight and it won't want to stay open. That's normal, and it's the wood doing its job — new ply has real spring in it. Fold it right back through a full turn two or three times to work the hinge loose, and after that it holds whatever shape you leave it in. Do this before you gift it, not after.

Choosing a size

• Small — 4" x 3" (10 x 8cm). A shelf accent. Sits between books rather than in front of them.
• Medium — 5.5" x 4.5" (14 x 11.5cm). The one most people want. Reads as a real book on a desk or nightstand, and throws enough light to work by.
• Large — 8.5" x 6.7" (21.5 x 17cm). A proper table lamp. Use it where you'd otherwise put a small shade.

Maple or walnut

Maple is pale and warm, and it disappears into oak furniture and light shelving. Walnut is darker and reads richer against white walls and black metal. Both give the same warm glow — the difference is the body, not the light.

Does it get hot? No. LEDs run cool, so you can leave it open against books or fabric.

How long does a charge last? Five to eight hours depending on brightness, and about five hours to charge fully over USB.

Will it stay open on its own? Yes, once you've worked the hinge loose — see the note above. The magnets in the covers hold it in a full circle, or you can leave it part-open like a book on a stand.
